19 Apr 2014 Taradale to Havelock Nth and 20 Apr Havelock Nth to Napier

19 Apr 2014 Breakfast in the room at the motel then off in the van to Mission Winery in Church Rd. Formerly run by the Marist Bros since the 1850s.
Then on to Church Rd Winery where we went on a tour with Denise who really knows her stuff. She explained the process of white and red winemaking, showed us around the factory then we had a lesson in how to tell the difference in wines and how food alters the taste.
On to another couple of tastings at the plentiful wineries of the area. Salvare was our lunch stop with more tastings (!) and grazing plates to share for lunch. We timed it well as it rained when we got inside. Back through more winery country to the Village Motel in Havelock Nth. I took a walk around the shopping centre but was too late to buy anything – just as well!
Dinner was at Craggy Peak Terroir Restaurant. Some bubbles to start then I had swordfish with clams and hay tart. Very swish place with wines to match.

Breakfast in the room then Anna met us for a 50km ride from Havelock North along the Tuki Tuki River loop then on to the Puketapu ramble along the coast back to Napier. The wind was a little strong until we got to just out of Napier then it was blowing a gale! Di gave up just before the wind got worse. Wish I’d gone back by van myself. Anna took me to a waterfall in a park right in Napier. There was a wedding being held there. Not far away was Takaro Trails where I dropped the bike and walked back to the Crown Hotel where we started on Friday.
The whole family joined us for dinner on our last night at Shed 2 Bistro on West Quay. I had Moroccan lamb and a chocolate brown for dessert. There was Anna, her partner Peter, Barry, Di, Sue, Lewis, Kerri-Anne and her mum, and of course, Jenny the organiser of this whole wonderful Easter weekend.
Tomorrow I’ll have time to look around Napier before being taken to the airport by Kerri-Anne around 12 noon.
