130411 Day 2 IPEd National Editors Conference

Another restless and warm night in Fremantle led me to get up early and take a walk around the foreshore. Walked past Little Creatures Brewery and a fishing boat unloading its catch. It cleared the cobwebs away a little and woke me up for the first official day of the conference.

I thought 200 people for a conference was not that many but when you see them all together in one room it really is quite a lot. We were welcomed by Bev Port-Louis with her ‘welcome to country’, the Mayor of Fremantle, Brad Pettitt and also Robin Bower, president of the Society of Editors (WA) Inc, Rob Sheehan and IPEd patron, Professor Roly Sussex.

The launch of the ‘Australian standards for editing practice’ 2nd edn was an exciting moment and a long time coming.

Keynote speaker Nury Vittachi kept us all in stitches with his ‘Globalese for beginners’ talk. An interesting fact that he mentioned was that 60% of people that speak English are actually Asian. The outcomes of that could be startling.

I met Elizabeth Spiegel on my first night in Fremantle at dinner. Apart from a few technical hitches her talk on ‘Creating an accessible web – the editor’s role’ was extremely interesting and made me think I should be changing my ways to gear for the future.

Next was Dr Angelo Loukakis speaking on ‘Editing in the digital age’ which was sitting on the floor room only! He has a long and colourful history in publishing and is now the president of the Australian Society of Authors.

Definitely time for a break from listening to people talk! I caught the blue CAT bus and did a tour of the Fremantle area.Got off at the maritime museum which I realised I’d visited before. On to getting some info on Rottnest Island ferrries at the sheds on the foreshore.

I’m going to get prettied up for our gala dinner in the Island Suite at the Esplanade Hotel tonight. It will probably be a late night so no more until tomorrow.

130409 Out and about in Fremantle

After freshening up at the quaint Fremantle B&B I took a wander around the Fremantle shopping centre. Guess what? I found The Bead Post, a cute little bead shop next to the post office. After dragging myself away from there and buying a metal drink bottle from the Red Cross shop I took a walk along the Fremantle foreshore. Walked up the steps to the Round House along the foreshore through the park to The Esplanade Hotel, setting for the conference.

i met (after wondering what they all looked like) Marisa (WA), Robin (WA), Calista (Qld), Charlotte (Qld) and Elizabeth (Tas) for drinks. The barman was no help at all pointing them out! On to Sandrino’s for dinner, and they were all massive. Mussels for Marisa, salmon for Charlotte, gnochhi for Calista, lamb cutlets for Robin. I had a veggie platter that I only ate half of. Not sure what Elizabeth had.

Really looking forward to the freelancing workshops tomorrow. God I’m tired. It’s 10pm here but it’s really midnight for me. Good night.
